Chapter Profile

The Ohio Chapter was established in the mid-1980's and currently has 76 active members including 42 Professionals. Serving a diverse retail design market, the Ohio Chapter has an enviable roster of members including some of the nation's category-leading retailers, numerous top design and architecture firms, as well as important supplier and trade media companies. The Ohio region's various highly ranked design schools also provide an opportunity for the chapter to prepare its members for the next generation of retail design excellence.

The Ohio Chapter is one of the Institute's more active chapters and generally convenes bimonthly at an industry-related networking and educational event. These gatherings typically feature creative studio, fabrication facility, and retail walking tours, as well as relevant presentations such as technique innovation, sustainable practices, and design trends. Led by a committee of four executive officers, the Chapter strives to represent the many facets of our memberships' needs. Several new initiatives for 2009 are underway, including a Chapter Student Design Competition and retail design curriculum, a national retail design archive, a series of interactive "roundtable" /idea exchange events, and a more useful chapter website offering event information, professional opportunities, and social networking among its members.

Chapter President's Message

I have been fortunate to be have been involved with Ohio Chapter in its continuing resurgence for the past two years, amid a changing economy and evolving retail industry. Serving some of the most fertile ground in the retail and design professions, the Ohio Chapter is well positioned to bring value to its membership and to further the mission of the Retail Design Institute. By offering relevant, focused, passionate, and timely support to its membership, real learning and networking opportunities abound for both well-established professionals and the next generation of retail design professionals.

The Chapter is proud to host the judging for the 2008 International Store Design Awards in November and has been participating in the development of a national retail design archive, possibly to be located in Ohio. As a professional society addressing the changing face of retail design, the Ohio Chapter will intensify its efforts in 2009 by promoting international collaboration, responsible business practices, and advocacy of our profession. A student design competition and curriculum are in the works for 2009 to further develop our profession's appeal and standing among young and emerging design talent.

I encourage all new and future members to get involved, participate in chapter events, and strive to further our profession as a vital player in the retail economy. Feel free to contact me regarding potential membership or our chapter's initiatives at any time.

I'll see you at the next event!

Kind Regards,

Brian Shafley, RDI
President, Ohio Chapter
