Chapter Profile

The New York Chapter of the Retail Design Institute is proudly the largest chapter in the organization. Its members include many architects, interior designers, store planners, fixture suppliers and other trades who live and work in what is certainly the retail store capital of the country. We have a long tradition of hosting monthly meetings where our members and guests can get together for refreshments and networking at a venue that includes a presentation of current trends and events in the world of store design. Now we have the opportunity to expand our networking to your desktop. In the coming months, you will see our website grow to include many new initiatives. We want to feature our members right here so that others can learn about us and join us in our enterprise. Tell us how we can help you to make your membership work for you.

President's Message

Chapter President's Message

With the new board in place, the New York Chapter of the Retail Design Institute is here to serve you.
Our board consists of Marc LaPointe (Chairman), Katie Blumhorst (VP), Kristine Krattiger (Sec), and
Tony Celano (Treasurer). Putting titles aside, our expanded board consists of Peter-Tolin Baker, Amie
Bentley, Maureen Farrell and Steven Schwartz.

All have volunteered for a variety of tasks in past years, generously giving of their time and skills so that
the institute can bring you opportunities to network, experience new retail projects, become informed
about new products and the enjoy social interaction with your peers.

Could the board be expanded? Absolutely. We are looking for an individual who would like to be a
Public liaison to design schools, other professional organizations, the press, the A and D community and
even focus on you: our public and our membership. Plus we would create a position on the board for
a role we haven't considered if it brings benefits for all.

Much happens out of sight at our public meetings. At our board meetings we always discuss how best to serve you. That is our greatest challenge. We have long provided meeting venues featuring new retail locations, the work of design firms, the work of individuals, editors' thoughts and product innovations.

Could we do better? Yes. As with the stock market, past performance does not predict the future. Though many of us have served the institute in the past, all of us look forward to new ideas even
though our attendance records show that we have had well attended meetings despite the economy and despite the cost. That is a great past. But we do want to provide you with more services and more reasons to join. With this comes a need to bring more people into the decision making process with new ideas, new skills and more hands.

I welcome our existing membership, potential new members and our new board for the year ahead. It is privilege to preside as President of the NY Chapter, which by the way, was the founding chapter of the Retail Design Institute. We have a great history and I hope a great future ahead. If you would like to send me comments about the institute, I welcome them and of course, your interest in volunteering. My e-mail is below.

Best regards,
