The Retail Design Institute's 41st International Store Design Awards Gala took place the evening of Monday January 16th at the Times Center Stage in New York City. Over three hundred of the retail design industry's top design talent, retailers, editors and vendors joined the Retail Design Institute as they recognized the top store designs from 2011.Emceed by Brian Dyches, FRDI the Institute's International President, and visually presented in musically themed movies of the winners, the evening's presentations moved quickly forward.
Announced and awarded by Brian Dyches, FRDI the Institute's International President with top honors for Store of the Year 2011 was Snackbox @ Times Square designed by Aedifica.
Other projects recognized for their outstanding achievements with first places included Saraiva Bookstore by FAL Design Estrategico para Varejo for Large Format Specialty Store, UK Chromezone by Make Retail for New Shop Within an Existing Full Line or Specialty Store, Starbucks Coffee, Portland Brewery Blocks by Starbucks for Quick Service Restaurant, International Currency Exchange by GH+A for Service Retail, Espoir by JHP for Hard Line Specialty Store, C & A Iguatemi by Chute Gerdeman for New or Completely Renovated Department Store, Bob's Store New Prototype Design for Value Retail and Giraffas International Restaurant prototype for restaurant Concept(Franchised) both by FRCH Design Worldwide , Duane Reade by CBX for Convenience Store, Crumpler Doncaster by Russell & George for Soft Line Specialty Store, Pusateri for Specialty Food/Gourmet Grocer, Wilde & Greene for Sit Down Restaurant both by GH+A ,Snaidero USA Showroom New York by Giorgio Borruso Design for Manufacturers Showroom and Mucho Burrito/Jimmy the Greek/Urban Herbivore/Villa Madina by Dialogue 38 for Counter Service/ Food Court Restaurant.
Nine retail projects were also awarded the special "Innovation" award for the new ground and excellence they demonstrated in key disciplines related to store design. Projects included 77kids by Michael Neumann Architecture, for Conceptual Design, Espoir by JHP for Fixtures, Crumpler Doncaster by Russell & George for Materiality, Fixtures Living by FITCH for Signage/Graphics, Sephora Meatpacking by Sephora for Store Planning, Aeropostale by GH+A for Storefront , Snackbox @Times Square by Aedifica for Sustainability, Bob's Store New Prototype by FRCH Design Worldwide for Merchandise Presentation, and Chili Beans Rock in Rio Digital Mirror by Chilli Beans for the First ever Innovative Sales Technology award.
The evening not only gave kudos to these great designers, retailers and their projects, it was a celebration of a fantastic year in retail design. It is truly the one time a year where the industry's peers get together, put aside their competitiveness, and join in commending each other for their accomplishments. This is the only retail design competition organized and judged solely by our peers.
