Saks Fifth Avenue, New York City Women's Shoe Salon Saks Store Planning and Highland Associates
The Saks store planning team and Highland Associates collaborated on the renovation and re-interpretation of the “10022 SHOE” branded 8th Floor women’s shoe department in the retailer’s Fifth Avenue flagship – a 28,000-sq.-ft. space known as THE destination in New York for designer women's shoes. The team’s “Central Park” theme included custom fixtures and furnishings to define individual vendors.
The faceted mirror portal entrance is a modern interpretation of the Bethesda Terrace entrance to Central Park. Similarly, walking through the arches in the terrace entry, the mirror portal gives the visitor differing views of the space, not through an array of arches but through differing reflections at differing angles. Once entered, two 25-ft.-long “rock formation” fixtures serve as a spine to the space. Displayed product rests on the fixtures’ ledges like the boulders Central Park visitors are known to climb on. At the edges, laser-cut tubes with petal-shaped shelves and organically shaped stone bases represent the trees that grow in the park. Custom ceramic art pieces cascade from the ceiling imply falling leaves helping to soften the ceiling plane into that of a sky.
