Andrew McQuilkin, FRDI, and Bruce Barteldt 2022 Legion of Honor Inductees

The newest legionnaires are Andrew McQuilkin, FRDI, design leader and partner, BHDP Architecture, Cincinnati, and Bruce Barteldt, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, chief innovation officer, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, Charlotte, N.C. They were inducted during the Institute’s 51st International Design Awards program in New York City on October 12, 2022.


Accepting the Legion of Honor Medal from fellow Legionnaire Ken Nisch, AIA, FRDI, McQuilkin called out the many individuals who have influenced and guided his long award-winning career which included stops at WalkerGroup, Fitzpatrick Design Group, FRCH Design Worldwide to present-day BHDP. McQuilkin is a past president and chairman of the Institute as well as former Ohio Chapter president and chairman.


Barteldt’s early career includes commercial, mixed-use, and residential projects before landing at Little, but not in the retail studio. At Little, he would come to fully participate in the retail design industry harnessing his previous experience eventually becoming retail practice leader and running award-winning teams before being named to his current post. Barteldt has been with Little for more than 30 years.

About the Legion of Honor: In 2001, recognizing the retail design profession of was driven not by business executives but by visionary designers, the Retail Design Institute established the Retail Design Legion of Honor. Since that time, the Institute has inducted 40 persons, nominated by Professional members of the Institute, for their contributions. Notable inductees include Raymond Loewy and Bill Snaith (posthumously), who established themselves and their firms as leading product and store designers.
