McDonald's, New York City Landini Associates
Landini Associate’s design brief was to create a site-specific evolution of its global format for McDonald’s, a long-time client. The main design challenge -- for the renovation of this existing location -- was creating an environment of calm and respite in New York’s Times Square, one of the busiest places on earth. Built over three floors, the nearly 12,000 sq. ft. location adopts a composed yet bold approach to design, creating a calm environment of respite in contrast to the energy outside. A three-story glass curtain wall provides customers with spectacular dining room views out to the beating heart of New York City, and a yellow staircase injects a pop of vibrancy whilst threading its way skywards. Concrete, glass, stainless steel, and oak form a palette of stylish simplicity – these classic, honest, and raw materials were sourced locally when possible. The colorful graphic environments that became the signature of McDonald’s internationally are replaced with a quieter approach; the walls of the store are decorated only with occasional abstractions of the golden arches, framing the view outside.
This project received an INNOVATION AWARD for BRANDING and an INNOVATION AWARD for DIGITAL INTEGRATION.
