Snow Peak is a Japanese company known for outdoor apparel and gear.
Last year it entered the US market with a 14,000-sq.-ft. combination headquarters and flagship store in Portland, Ore. Working with Skylab Architecture, the team turned a nondescript 1980s-era building into a multi-use facility for functions ranging from retailing, food service, offices and events.
Natural materials abound -- from the hand-troweled concrete, loose river rock, wood paneling and custom wall coverings -- to encourage visitors to embrace the outdoors. Century-old Douglas fir beams were milled and stacked into a fixture system as a contemporary, American-inspired nod to traditional Japanese wood building methods.
