Southwest + Pacific - May 2024 Newsletter

Greetings Retail Design Institute Southwest + Pacific Chapter Members!

What a great night last Friday at the brand new Rivian showroom at their South Coast Theater in Laguna Beach. It was a huge turnout with an exclusive tour guided by Rivian leadership and the architect of record, RDC. Special thanks to RDC and AIA Orange County for sponsoring and putting the event together.

Constructed in 1934, the historic Laguna Beach Theater has been transformed into a local community and experience center owned by electric-car manufacturer, Rivian. Now known as the Rivian South Coast Theater, the space is now used not only as the automaker's showroom, but also as a community center, hosting events, showcasing films, providing education and a fun place to relax for the neighborhood. Rivian beautifully restored the theater, bringing the classic Art Deco movie theater design back to its original glory and modernizing it for today's demands.

2024 Shop! Design Award winners The Set, Los Feliz

Special shout-out to Retail Design Institute Southwest + Pacific's very own board members, RDC and retailREHAB, for winning the 2024 Shop! Gold Award for the Specialty Food and Consumables Retailer category for their cannabis dispensary, The Set, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. This project is a great example of how the Retail Design Institute fosters connections that can grow into successful business partnerships that last.

The design team created a retail experience that nods to the movie and music industry. Large, light-filled windows in the entryway contrast with the rich, dark interiors, where customers discover a center-stage display featuring new products and occasional live performances. Within the retail space is an immersive showroom that layer’s cannabis displays over movie memorabilia like rolling trucks and film reels. A VIP lounge is strategically located near the checkout area to encourage guests to stay and collaborate. The renovation breathes life into the 1921 building that enlivens the landmark retail site.
