The Hyundai, Seoul
Design: Burdifilek, Toronto Photography: Yongjoon Choi Photography, Seoul
The Huyndai opened a new 102,000-sq.-ft. department store in Seoul. They called on Burdifilek to handle the interior design of the multi-story location. Veering away from global retail trends, the store was designed to be approachable, while providing visionary design elements that are inspirational and aspirational.
At the entrance atrium, a 40-ft tall sculptural waterfall greets customers with the sound of cascading water. A skylight extends through the building core and bathes the space in natural light. Each floor speaks its own design language through architecture, custom fixturing, furnishings, surfacing materials, and display elements, all tailored to the merchandise and lifestyle trends of its intended customer. The second floor offers a gallery-like space to meander and explore women’s fashion. The lighting plan, combined with the subdued color palette, underscores the sophisticated atmosphere. On the third level, the design team contrasted natural and man-made materials, unfinished ceilings, custom-built, vacuum-formed sculptural walls, and a simple color palette, to speak directly to featured brands.
Judges found the space ‘stunning’ and on-trend with plenty of merchandising show stoppers.
